English Heritage Wrest Park Case Study

The Customer

Wrest Park was until 2006 the home to the National Institute of Agricultural Engineers. The Institute closed in 2006 and English Heritage took over the management of the house and gardens and began a plan to explore and restore both, starting with the Revitalisation Project.

The Challenge

Phase I of the Revitalisation project was to restore the PABX telephone room to its original aspect. The campus system had supported up to 1200 users in disparate locations across the 250-acre estate.

All local and external wiring terminated on to a TJF within the telephone room. Openreach and third party network operator’s equipment were co-located in this area.

I would highly recommend Tom Murphy and his networking team for delivering the project on time and within budget whilst identifying significant cost savings to English Heritage.

The Deliverables

  • To audit and survey existing voice and data cabling routes affected by the transforming Wrest Park Project
  • To identify functional cabling and create an access route to enable the relocation of retained services to the Basement
  • To remove obsolete cabling and network services frames
  • To provide suitably sized CW1308 (voice) cabling and fibre network links to Porters Lodge, the new administration centre for the estate
  • To audit and document network services - ISDN 30, ISDN 2e, analogue, DACS & alarm circuits, completing end to end testing, and DSL speed tests
  • All work to be completed out of hours, with the minimum disruption to staff or tenants and minimal downtime to network services
  • Documentation and sign off - project duration 12 weeks

PSG were able to understand the complexity of the project and the importance of the timeline very quickly. They brought their experience to hand and created a project plan starting with the network audit.

The Solution

On successful completion of Phase 1, PSG was awarded the contract to design and deliver an IT solution to support a new visitor’s centre, shop and cafe, children's play area, new exhibitions, and restored gardens:

  • Communications network design
  • External fibre & copper link cabling from Mansion House to Visitors Centre
  • Internal & External warranted cabling system
  • Wireless Network
  • Wireless Network Support & Maintenance
  • IP Telephony Platform
English Heritage Wrest Park

PSG understood the complexity of the project and the importance of delivering a quick turnaround. It was obvious from the beginning that they are very experienced in the industry and created a project plan
starting with the network audit. The audit enabled us to cease old and obsolete circuits giving us an instant cost saving. The fibre and copper infrastructure cabling routes were installed with minimal disruption to staff and clients - in a listed building with public access this took some planning.

Connectivity was provided to the new Mitel telephony platform and brought into service. To make the most of the new communications platform PSG held individual, group, and operator training the following day. PSG supports the infrastructure cabling, network services & Mitel telephone system.

I would highly recommend Tom Murphy and his networking team for delivering the project on time and within budget whilst identifying significant cost savings to English Heritage.
